"Basta Sugat, Minglanilla ang Sikat" "Sugat Capital of the South"
The Sugat Kabanhawan Festival in Minglanilla, Cebu, is a really vibrant and meaningful celebration that happens every Easter Sunday. It's deeply rooted in both religious practices and local culture, basically celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ and bringing new hope to the community.
Here's the List of Schedule of Activities:
Meaning & Origin: The name itself comes from Cebuano words: "Sugat" means "welcome" or "meeting," and "Kabanhawan" means "resurrection". The tradition of a public reenactment of the Resurrection started way back in 1889. It became more of a social event in 2005 when festival activities were added to the religious ceremony.
The Main Event - Sugat: The highlight is a poignant reenactment of the meeting between the Risen Christ and the grieving Blessed Virgin Mary. It starts before dawn on Easter Sunday at the Minglanilla Plaza or Sports Complex. This dramatic tableau includes a "Little Angel" played by a child descending from above, symbolizing Mary's joy at seeing her resurrected son. It's known for its complex stunt work, impressive performances, and elaborate costumes, with child angels often suspended by wires.
Activities & Atmosphere: Beyond the religious reenactment, the festival is a lively affair with cultural performances, music, and dancing. You'll find colorful street parades with marching bands and folk dancers. In past years, there have been Easter egg hunts, street dancing and ritual showdowns, sports, and fireworks displays. You can also indulge in local delicacies from food stalls lining the streets.
"Sugat Capital of the South": Because of its long-standing tradition and how many people it draws from other towns, Minglanilla has earned the nickname "Sugat Capital of the South".
It's a really big deal for the people of Minglanilla, and it's a fantastic way to experience a blend of faith, tradition, and community spirit!
