$200 Budget Movie becomes $3.5M Box-office hit in China

A $200 animated film just became one of China’s most unexpected box-office sensations! 🐮💰

‘Niu Lai’ is a low-budget Chinese animated film created by a mother-son duo, Xin Yumeng and Sun Lifang, who spent around five years bringing the project to life.

The film reportedly cost only around $200 to make and initially received virtually no traditional marketing or promotional campaign. But after its rough animation went viral online, audiences started flocking to theaters just to experience the bizarre phenomenon for themselves.

With little to no official promotional material available, cinemas across China even began creating their own hand-drawn posters to promote the film, turning the unusual marketing situation into part of the movie’s viral appeal.

From a tiny budget to millions at the box office, ‘Niu Lai’ has become one of the wildest indie animation success stories of 2026!
