The El Niño phenomenon has now reached the moderate to strong category, with the latest monitoring showing a sea surface temperature anomaly of 1.8°C, according to Engr. Jhomer Eclarino of the PAGASA Weather Forecasting Section in Central Visayas.
Eclarino said the El Niño is expected to persist until the first half of 2027, with the possibility of further intensifying to the very strong category before the end of 2026.
Based on the latest outlook, dry conditions may be experienced by the end of November, followed by a dry spell from the end of December through January 2027, and possible drought conditions by the end of February.
Dry conditions refer to below-normal rainfall over a period, while a dry spell involves a more prolonged period of significantly reduced rainfall. Drought, meanwhile, is a more serious and prolonged lack of rainfall that can affect water supply, agriculture, and communities.
With the latest monitoring showing a strong El Niño, PAGASA is now urging the public and government agencies to take precautionary measures and prepare early for its possible impacts.
