Declining Tourist Arrivals in Bohol: What Could Be the Reasons?
Bohol remains one of the Philippines’ most popular tourist destinations, known for the Chocolate Hills, pristine beaches, diving spots, historic churches, and the Bohol-Panglao International Airport. However, some tourism businesses and local communities may experience periods when tourist arrivals and spending appear to decline.
Bohol's tourism sector faced a sharp 59% drop in visitor arrivals in the first quarter of 2026, falling to 170,016 from 417,142 during the same period in 2025.
High Costs and Overpricing: Visitors and locals note steep prices for food, high entrance fees (such as ₱150 for the Chocolate Hills), expensive local transport, and costly airfares compared to nearby destinations.
Flight Reductions: Direct international flights from primary markets like South Korea to Panglao International Airport decreased significantly.
Several factors can contribute to this situation. Rising travel costs, including airfare, accommodation, food, and transportation, can make Bohol less affordable for some travelers. Strong competition from other Philippine destinations such as Cebu, Siargao, Boracay, and Palawan also gives tourists more choices. Seasonal weather, particularly heavy rains and typhoons, can discourage visitors and affect outdoor activities.
Another concern is the quality and consistency of tourism services. Issues such as traffic, overcrowding in popular attractions, environmental concerns, and inconsistent prices can influence a visitor’s decision to return. Changes in international travel trends and economic conditions can also affect the number of foreign tourists.
To attract more visitors, Bohol can continue promoting sustainable tourism, unique local experiences, cultural attractions, improved transportation, and affordable travel packages. Supporting local businesses while protecting Bohol’s natural environment will also be important in keeping the province attractive to both domestic and international tourists.
Bohol’s tourism industry may face challenges, but with proper planning, innovation, and cooperation between government, businesses, and communities, the province can regain momentum and remain a top destination in the Philippines.
