Every November 2, millions of people around the world celebrate All Souls’ Day, a special day dedicated to remembering and praying for those who have passed away.
But did you know that this tradition dates back more than a thousand years?
The observance became widely associated with Saint Odilo of Cluny, a French abbot who, around the year 998, encouraged monasteries to offer prayers for all the faithful departed on November 2. Over time, the tradition spread throughout the Catholic Church.
In the Philippines, All Souls’ Day is known as Araw ng mga Patay. Families visit cemeteries, light candles, offer flowers, and pray for their departed loved ones. It is a time when families come together to remember the people who once filled their lives with love, happiness, and unforgettable memories.
Behind every candle is a memory. Behind every flower is a story. And behind every tear is a love that never fades.
Although our loved ones may no longer be physically with us, their kindness, lessons, and memories remain in our hearts.
This November 2, let us remember that All Souls’ Day is not only about mourning those we have lost. It is also about honoring the lives they lived and the love they left behind.
🕯️ Because people may leave this world, but they never truly leave the hearts of those who love them.
May all the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen. 🙏
